I hope you do not mind, but I would really like to put a link in my journal to this site as an example of how someone can disaggree with certain actions without disrespecting the ones that do agree.
I'd like to do it especially as you have written it so well and included many valuable links in your text.

You can find me in livejournal with the user name sigrid_stallard.

Kind regards
Sigrid

Thanks, Sigrid!

As much as LiveJournal can be a bastion of drama, I also think it's a "place" that's really full of a lot of people who care about substantive dialog, and who are passionate about defending free speech and openness of discourse-- and that's something I really appreciate.

I am one of those who supports the boycott/strike. I am glad I came across this site. I encountered much vitreol about this subject and really enjoyed to read how somebody can reason against the boycott without insulting the other side.

I am giving lj the cold shoulder for today. The changes do not affect me personally because I too am a long-term paying member. I have come to enjoy lj immensely and I am very much in love with the idea. As I see it lj was until recently the building society of all those blogging sites, i.e. it was made by its users and was there for its users. Now it is wrongly or rightly turned into bank plc - the user, initially bribed with some added, superfluous shiny bells and ribbons, ends up paying for those the unknown non-contributors. Yes, I know it is supposed to be part of what we call the new 'global commercialism' - everything can be bought and there has to be a profit in everything or it just has to be got rid of.

I am under no illusions that this one-day boycott will be followed by many lj users. If anything there is just a lot of spite and many will post extra entries to make up for the shortfall that 'strikers' might cause. In my ideal imagination I would hope that enough people would have followed the boycott worldwide to give a signal to the new owners about the discontent. I have never complained to lj before, I am not one of those 'lj hobby complainers' or 'drama queens'. Far from it, but I am concerned about the meddling of the owners with tools such as 'flagging' and screening certain interest subjects for a short time 'just to test the servers abilities'. It makes me nervous.

Anyway, I didn't mean to take too much of your time. I just really enjoyed reading such such a reasonable, sensible assessment of the current lj issue.

Thank you.

Tad, this is a fantastic piece. I really like how you covered this issue - I'm definitely of the "hmm...how should I feel about this?" mind, and honestly, I couldn't fully embrace the strike/boycott, but wondered if I should feel guilty.

I won't be participating in the strike/boycott either.
